Off and on, I’ve taken a number of different supplements, vitamins, and medications over the course of my life time. Sometimes prescribed by a doctor, and sometimes just over the counter stuff based on information I’ve read or received from trusted sources. I’m usually a pretty healthy guy, so most of the stuff that I take is of the over the counter stuff. One of the things I do find these days, is that there is so much conflicting information about what kinds of things you should be putting into your body, that the average consumer can get pretty easily confused. Unless you spend a lot of time reading labels and understanding ingredients and all the pros and cons of what your taking in combination with the potential side effects you may as well just go to medical school, and get it over with.
Even the big R&D drug companies find the whole process complicated enough to warrant having their formulation development done by outsourcing companies. That way it allows them to focus on the research and development side of things, which is their core strength. The trick I think for the average person, is to understand what their core strength is when it comes to food, nutrition, vitamins, supplements and medicine. That is of course why we have doctors and nutritionists and fitness trainers isn’t it. Trying to understand all of it on your own, is enough to drive you crazy. It’s like you need to outsource some of this stuff of to people you can trust that have the expertise to guide your through the maze of ingredients and pitfalls.
It’s something I need to be doing more of in my life. Instead of doing the lone wolf approach and trying to figure it out all for myself. At the moment, I’m in a bit of a holding pattern when it comes to that stuff. There are a few things I take on a regular basis these days. I do a multi vitamin, that is supposedly formulated specifically for men, since that’s what I am;) I also will add to this vitamin C under certain conditions. One, if I start to feel the slightest bit like I’m going to get sick, or two, if anyone else in my house starts to catch something. It’s an approach that seems to be working for me. Over the last week, everyone else in my house seem to have gotten terribly sick, but I sailed through with just a few sniffles and a sore throat. Fingers crossed.
So, give some thought to what your eating and taking, and maybe enlist some expert advice along the way.
