Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Symptoms and Treatment
During pregnancy among approimately 7% or less of women develop what is known as gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes is only found during pregnancy.
In pregnant women there is a need for more insulin. The pancreas works hard to keep up the demand, but hormones can block the effect of the insulin getting to the cells. This results in an increase in blood glucose. This generally happens between 20 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Risk factors for women are being over 30, obese, family history, having a previous child over nine pounds, too much amniotic fluid, high blood pressure, or a previous pregnancy involving gestational diabetes.
Symptoms would include excessive thirst or hunger, urinating above the normal limit, gaining too much weight, and vaginal infections that keep coming back.
Diagnosis of gestational diabetes would involve a glucose tolerance test. For this test the patient will have to drink a sugary glucose solution. After an hour blood will be drawn. If the test shows an abnormal glucose level more testing will follow involving more sugar solutions and blood draws until a definate diagnosis is given.
Diabetes mellitus treatment will be important. A diet will need to be followed. The mother must avoid high sugar foods, eat high carbohydrate and fiber rich foods. Saturated fats will also need to be avoided. Eating a snack at bedtime will be helpful, as well.
Exercise will be necessary to maintain a healty pregancy weight. Strenuous activity should be avoided, but at least 30 minutes of activity is essential. Pregnant women should gain between 25 and 35 pounds during the entire pregnancy.
Monitoring glucose levels will be important. Keeping them on track will keep mother and baby healthy. If the gestational diabetes is bad enough then daily injections of insulin may become necessary. This is the extreme if diet and exercise doesn’t work.
