Green Tea Benefits

July 18th, 2010 -- Posted in nutrition | No Comments »

The history of Green Tea is a long and exotic one, with the ancient Chinese long extolling the virtues of the drink and placing great faith in its life giving and healing properties. It wasn’t until the 1700′s that tea found its way to European shores, but only recently have the benefits of green tea been fully realised in the western world.

There is a lot written on the web about green tea benefits, much of it anecdotal but also now backed up scientifically and the list of ailments green tea is claimed to be able to cure or prevent is extensive indeed. It includes cures for digestive problems, the ability to improve the time it takes to heal wounds, purification of the blood and detoxification of poisons.

Scientists continue to investigate claims of its health advantages, but study after study has shown that drinking green tea has curative or preventative powers. It is claimed that Green tea can:

  • Reduce cholesterol
  • Shrink tumors/cause cancerous cells to die
  • Improve blood vessel function
  • Slow the passage of glucose in diabetics and regulate insulin levels
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce triglycerides
  • Provide protection against heart attack and stroke
  • Act as an anti-inflammatory and promotes the growth of good bacteria in the intestine
  • Staves off Alzheimer’s – investigations taking place suggest it may work on Parkinson’s as well
  • Inhibit viral infections
  • Fight bad breath
  • Trigger weight loss

Of course these are not guaranteed, but people have reported benefit in all of these areas to varying degrees. How is this possible? Scientists attribute the miraculous healing benefits of green tea to the high concentration of antioxidants found in both the tea leaves in the wild and the steeped tea that we drink.

Antioxidants are vary importing in neutralising the effect of something called free radicals in the human body. Free radicals
are the atoms that are thought to accelerate ageing and damage skin. Ultimately Free radicals have in their place in biology and we should not strive to eliminate them altogether, but we can combat the types of free radicals whose cumulative effect is harmful to our bodies with Antioxidants.

Usually our antioxidant intake come from fruits and vegetables, and, not surprisingly, in tea. But studies show that green tea has 8-10 times more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables, another reason to cultivate the tea-drinking habit.

Skating as Healthy Cardio Exercises

July 16th, 2010 -- Posted in Fitness | No Comments »

It’s undeniable that millions of people don’t get enough exercise in their lives every week. The American Heart Association recommends at least twenty minutes a day of vigorous exercise three times a week, but many people fall short week after week, despite the fact that the time commitment is small and fun cardio exercises actually exist.

One of the reasons many people don’t follow an exercise routine is that they dread the thought of huffing and puffing for half an hour every other day, doing an activity they hate. Additionally, traditional cardio exercises like running and sports can be very hard on the joints, especially the knees, and for many people, cardio training like this is out of the question.

However, with skating, your feet are on the ground almost the whole time, which is a smooth experience for your joints, and you’re able to go faster on wheels or ice than you can running, so it’s a more fun experience in general. Skating is a great workout for your quadriceps and hamstrings, and if you make an effort, you can also incorporate your biceps, triceps, and shoulder muscles while you skate to give them a thorough workout as well.

For those afraid of falling or with poor balance, roller skates are extremely easy to balance on due to their dual row of wheels. Stopping is simple, and usually involves pressing forward or backward to let the “brake” scrape the ground and slow you down. Skates are best used on very smooth surfaces, such as rinks, linoleum, and smooth concrete surfaces. For people interested in group activities, roller derby is exploding in popularity as a sport, and an entire game can be an exhausting workout but very fun.

For those looking for speed or a more multi-purpose option that can also be used as a form of transportation (once you’re able to stop consistently, that is), inline skates, or roller blades, are a more streamlined version of skates that usually provide more of a workout than roller skates, simply because they aren’t used on as smooth of surfaces, and you will actually have to get your quads burning to get traction on bumpy surfaces.

Ice skating is another skating alternative that may depend on your proximity to a rink to determine how feasible an option this is. Holding yourself upright on the thin blades is a workout in and of itself for many people, but the satisfaction of learning to skate, turn, and stop on the ice is undeniable. Many ice rinks offer arrangements where skaters who are good enough to teach younger children the basics will earn free ice time for themselves to skate. And if you do enjoy ice skating, you can join a hockey league and get inexpensive ice time as well.

Next time you find yourself dreading exercising, try to expand your horizons a little and look for activities that are genuinely fun that will get your heart rate up at the same time. You will be a healthier and happier person for your cardio workouts.

Does Losing Weight Improve Quality of Life?

July 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Weight Control | No Comments »

There is always a reason that drives a person when the decision is made to lose weight. Maybe your motivation comes from knowing that you are going to have to be healthy if you want to live long enough to see your children have their own children. Maybe you are tired of having to shop around to find nice clothes that fit. Whatever caused you to make the decision to start losing weight, you will find that as you lose more and more weight, your overall quality of life will improve. You might be surprised to find out just what an improvement in your quality of life you can have when you lose even a moderate amount of weight.

When you have been overweight for a long time, you begin to feel lots of different aches and pains as you go through your day. The lower back is particularly susceptible to this pain, as are the ankles and knees. The pain in the back and joints tells you that they are straining to bear more weight than they have evolved to handle. I was pleasantly surprised when I first noticed that many of those pains were going away and I wasn’t hurting like I was before. I found it surprising that it only took losing 10% of my weight to eliminate many of the pains that I had endured for years.

My weight was causing me embarassment every day in any number of ways, but those embarassments became less and less as I lost weight. You have probably experienced the particular kind of embarassment that goes with finding out publicly that a chair was too narrow to accommodate you. Maybe a small child shocked his parents by asking you directly what happened to make you fat. There are many more examples that I could have named, but these two are ones that almost everyone who is obese have been though at some point. I felt better about myself with every small victory, and I felt a rush every time I was able to do something that I couldn’t before. With every new goal that I surpassed, my strength and confidence grew.

Throughout society, you will find evidence of bias against the overweight; it is especially painful and hard to think about when you feel that bias yourself. At some point, almost anyone who is very overweight has tried to sit in a chair that was too small for them. The sad, but simple fact is that when the designer was putting that chair together, a person my size was not even considered. When you look at modern life, this idea can be seen everywhere, such as when you are unable to find clothes that fit or are unable to find a job because the employer is biased. People who are different have always been looked down on by the rest of society, no matter how cruel that is.

It does not matter what your weight loss goals are; you will be able to adjust your lifestyle in order to reach them. If you have a lot of weight to lose, success will require you to make quite a few changes throughout your lifestyle. Achieving your weight loss goals will be harder than you may think, but using effective weight loss solutions instead of miracle promises will get you there.  Diets that work involve good sense and smart choices, not ridiculous restrictions.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Laser Assisted Liposuction

July 15th, 2010 -- Posted in cosmetic surgery | No Comments »

Losing weight is a difficult task and it is for this reason that many individuals consider laser assisted liposuction. Liposuction sucks fat cells out of the body. In order to do this, a small cut must be made in the body and a tube is inserted to suck out the fat. Once removed from the body, the fat cells will only return if the individual resorts to overeating.

Traditional liposuction is usually associated with several side effects, including pain, bruising, swelling and sagging skin in the area in which fat was removed. Laser assisted liposuction, however, is a new development in liposuction which is associated with fewer side effects than traditional liposuction. Furthermore, the treatment helps to eliminate excess fat yet provides the benefit of a shortened recovery. Hence, this new, revolutionary form of liposuction it is the preferred form of treatment for many.

Laser assisted liposuction utilizes lasers to heat up the fat cells. This causes the cells to melt slightly and as a result, they become more liquid. This makes them much easier to suction up and remove from the body. Those cells that are not suctioned out of the body get processed in the liver and eliminated via the urine.

The advantage to this is method of liposuction is that the probe inserted into the individuals skin is much smaller in size than the probe used in traditional liposuction. A known side effect of laser assisted liposuction is that the body produces the protein collagen. However, this is advantageous as collagen prevents the skin from sagging. Furthermore, the laser used in ultrasonic liposuction of this kind cauterizes wounds, making for a reduction in swelling and therefore a quicker recovery. Furthermore, the end result is much more aesthetically pleasing than that achieved by traditional liposuction.

While ultrasonic liposuction may cost more in comparison to its predecessor, it produces greater results and for this reason, it is unsurprising that it is in high demand.

Network Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatica

July 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Featured, Healing | No Comments »

There are some cases that present quite a challenge for the traditional medical community when it comes to musculoskeletal complaints. One of these is sciatica pain that is characterized by a sharp pain that originates in the lower back region and radiates down the leg. It is typically a one-sided phenomenon and travels down the back of the leg on the affected side. If the condition is severe enough, the pain may extend into the heel or big toe.

This type of condition is difficult for the primary care physician to treat because it does not respond as well to drug treatment solutions. The reason for this is due to the fact that the cause of the problem is often due to compression or irritation at the nerve roots of the spine. These roots are located adjacent to the spinal bones and can be areas that are physically altered due to wear and tear or the nerves may be stretched or compressed due to more common stress induced conditions. continue reading »

How Do You Know It Is Time To Lose Weight?

July 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Weight Control | No Comments »

People often joke about putting on a little winter weight, or say that the reason they have put on so much weight is because they are content (this is a popular one with newly weds). It starts with a small joke over the extra 5 or 10 pounds you are carrying and then you add in a pizza night once a week and the next thing you know you are having to buy a bigger size pair of pants or dress. So how do you know that now is definitely the right time to lose weight? If you have a queen sized bed but have to buy a  Oversized King Bedspread just so you are fully covered when you sleep then it is time to start looking at less pizza and more exercise. Carrying a few extra pounds is one thing, being so overweight that you are noticing some of these things:- -Love life is going downhill -Trouble staying awake all day -You are unwilling to go out with your kids because you get so darn tired after 20 mins outside -Out of breath if you walk up the stairs -Snoring so loudly no one else in the house can sleep All of these problems are real ones that overweight people experience every single day. Some are physically debilitating while other ones have a mental affect on us. If you are snoring that loudly and think you may have sleep apnea then it is time to see a dr and there is a good chance that the first thing he will suggest is that you lose weight. If your libido is falling away then it could well effect your marriage or relationship in the long term. If the thought of missing out on playing with your kids, losing your spouse and being made to sleep in the garden shed aren’t enough to make you look at ways to lose weight I don’t know what will do it for you. Losing weight can be broken down to the simple mathematical formula of taking in less calories than you use for an extended period of time so that your body uses up the supplies of energy that it has been storing as fat. Sounds a lot simpler when you write it down than it is in real life. The expression that comes to mind is “Mind over Matter” if your mindset is poor then you will find it much harder to lose weight, when you are totally convinced that shedding those extra pounds will change your life then you will find it far easier to do.
