Do Detox Diets Really Work?

January 13th, 2012 -- Posted in Detox, Health | No Comments »

Most people resort to detox diet to keep those unwanted bulges away. Detox diets are also seen as a way to cleanse the body off the toxins we get from eating junk foods and fried food. But is it really the solution to lose those extra inches?

Detox diet mainly consists of liquids, fruits and vegetables that usually last for 7 to 10 days. It’s true that the detox diet is high in fiber, because of the inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the diet. But this can simply be achieved by adopting a sensible diet with lots of fiber rich fruits and vegetables. Detox diet can oftentimes do harm to the body. It restricts the body of the needed carbohydrates and protein that is essential for normal functioning. People on detox diet usually experience dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dehydration, anemia, low blood sugar, and malnutrition. Our body also has the natural capacity to eliminate toxins by filtering it through the kidneys. So one need not undergo this fad diet just to cleanse their body.  Other types of detox diet involve the use of herbal supplements and laxatives to empty the intestines.  But this continuous method of colonic irrigation leads to infected bowel, which can be deadly.

Remember, you need not go to extreme detox diet to be healthy. Adopting a sensible diet that is high in whole grains, fiber rich fruits and vegetables, and adequate amount of lean protein is what makes up a healthier lifestyle.  Just because people from phlebotomy training schools told you that detox had a good effect on them doesn’t mean the same thing will happen to you. So, before you engage in any form of detox diet, consulting a doctor is highly recommended.
