Posture Support Brace

August 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

When a posture support brace is needed, the consumer will have many different items to choose from. These items do not come in one size fit all and there are different types that may be designed to treat particular problems. Three of the most common are utilized to help prevent and/or correct rounding of the shoulders, provide support to the mid to lower back and of course, the models that may be utilized for mild non-specific postural issues. Knowing what you need can be very significant in terms of whether or not you receive the maximum benefit of using this product and being comfortable. Look for braces that offer the most stabilization in areas in need of extra support.

The next important factor in choosing the right posture support brace is the type of material and features that the item may have. As with similar products, the consumer may find various materials, which can include spandex and lycra. Some are also made of latex but are typically not recommended for all day everyday use, as this may irritate the skin.  However, if this is still a viable option for the consumer, it is recommended that they wear something underneath to aid in prevention of skin breakdown and allow the body enough time without it. Other features may include shoulder straps and the ability to make adjustments.

Wearing a posture brace can not only help correct posture, but also can help relieve and prevent aches and pains for some individuals. If possible, one should try the item on before purchasing it to ensure a proper fit and to see how it will feel. A crucial aspect for some may also be costs. Although affordable versions may be available, products with additional features and added support mechanisms may cost somewhat more than other versions of the item.

Understanding How a Poison Oak Cure Works

August 18th, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

Poison oak is a common cause for worry when people are outdoors. The leaves of the oak produce a type of oil known as urushiol, which contains a chemical that causes an allergic reaction once it comes in contact with the skin. This allergic reaction includes itching, inflammation, burning, blistering and redness. Doctors frequently refer to these symptoms as contact dermatitis. A poison oak cure can help alleviate symptoms and minimize discomfort.

Treating rashes

The oil or resin from the plant triggers an allergic reaction in a person. To cure this, immediate and complete removal of the oil from the skin is the best remedy. Once contact with the leaves occurs, the affected area should immediately be washed with water and soap. The quicker a rash is remedied, the better is the likelihood it will be cured. Since poison oak rashes will cause itching, this symptom may be controlled with the use of antihistamines (topical or oral) and cortisone creams. If severe rashes appear accompanied by pain and discomfort, a stronger treatment may be prescribed by a doctor. If blisters are present, they should be covered with a piece of gauge to minimize the risk of an infection.

An important thing to remember about poison oak is that some people are more allergic to it than others and thus will experience worse symptoms. Instead of relying on a cure, people who are prone to suffering from intense reactions from this plant are better off using preventative measures, such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants or avoiding contact completely.

Prevention or cure?

One of the best ways to avoid experiencing an allergic reaction to poison oak is to prevent it, especially if venturing outdoors in a location where poison oak is present. There are medicated lotions that can be applied onto exposed skin to protect it against the toxic secretions of the plant. The lotion is reapplied every few hours or so to ensure continuous protection while outdoors. This will significantly reduce the likelihood that an individual will experience an allergic reaction even if he comes in contact with the plant.

Dealing with migraine treatment while traveling

July 5th, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

Anyone who has ever had to deal with migraine headaches knows it can affect your life in many ways. This is no different when it comes to traveling. The onset of a migraine headache during a vacation can bring your fun to a screeching halt. The only thing you can do for migraine treatment when traveling is to prepare ahead of time.

Getting a migraine headache while driving can be especially hard to deal with. Since you usually need to relax in a dark quiet place, a car is not the most hospitable environment for your headache. In order to prepare for such an event it is wise to pack earplugs or some type of noise canceling headphones to provide as much quiet as possible. Also, if cold or heat packs help with your migraine headache then it is wise to pack these as well. Cold packs can be packed in a cooler of ice and a small heat pad can be used in the car as well. Simply pack an AC/DC inverter in the car in order to plug the heat back in, or you may also use heat packs such as Hot Hands which can provide hours of soothing heat with no electricity.

It is also wise to plan ahead for hotel stays. Call the hotel directly and request a room as far away from any noise as possible. Ideally, this would be a top floor room at the end of a hall away from any ice or vending machines. This will provide you with a nice quiet room in case you need to relax during a migraine. Most hotels will be very accommodating and reserve these types of rooms for you.

A cruise ship may be another vacation destination which may require planning ahead if you are a frequent sufferer of migraines. Just as in the case of the hotel, you may want to plan ahead by calling the cruise line and requesting a cabin which is as far away from any noise as possible. Also, pack earplugs and sleeping eyeshades to provide you with a dark, quiet environment.

Having a migraine headache while traveling does not have to completely ruin your vacation. Plan ahead to try and minimize the attack as much as possible. Many of the places which you will be staying have dealt with guests who have had migraine attacks at their facilities in the past. These people are usually more than happy to help make your stay as comfortable as they can.

How to Use a Stop Snoring Mouthpiece?

June 21st, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

Snoring is a widely spread health issue that affects men as much as women. The snoring sound is really bothersome. This is why many couples had troubles due to it, and sometimes that was so serious that it came to divorce. In order to get rid of it, different anti snoring devices have been invented, among which there is the stop snoring mouthpiece.

Scientists have deeply studied the process of snoring and its causes to conceive this tool. And finally now, we know that the irritating sound is a result of the vibration of the throat soft tissues while sleeping.

The Snoring Mouthpiece – also called “Mandibular splint” – is a small device that you put inside your mouth while sleeping. But before using it, you have to mold it accurately to fit your dental structure. Some patients stand by a dentist to do this while you can simply do it yourself. You have just to follow these steps:

-           Boil the device in hot water for 5 minutes.

-           Displace it to cold water for 1 minute and a half to avoid harming your mouth.

-           Put it around your teeth and exert some pressure on it until it takes the form of your jaw. This takes about 30 to 40 seconds.

-           Move it to cold water for 5 minutes.

As the device is made from two parts, you have to proceed with the same operations for both of them. Once this done, you have only to match them, and you are ready to sleep.

The stop snoring mouthpiece acts on the direct causes of snoring to eventually cure it. Actually, it prevents the windpipe blockage by carrying your lower jaw forward and keeping your tongue towards the top of your mouth. So, the patient will have more air circulating through his airway, and he will be breathing more easily through his nose. Hence, he will no more hear the annoying sound and his partner will at last be able to enjoy a peaceful regenerating night.

The 4 Types of Knee Braces

June 4th, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

Physical activity is becoming more fashionable these days with the rise of a more health conscious population but even though people are striving to get healthy and stay fit they are also running the risk of injuring themselves. One of the most common types of athletic injury is a knee injury. Your knees work hard to support your body weight and move you around but they are often mistreated while playing sports like football, hockey, and basketball. To prevent future knee problems you should try carrying a knee brace in your sports bag to use during your work-outs.

There are four different types of knee braces. If you are considering wearing one you should know the difference between each type so that you can make the right choice. Each knee brace offers specific functionality and support. It is a good idea to consult your Doctor or physical therapist before you make any investments in a particular knee brace. Your personal physician will be able to guide you in your choice and make sure you get the exact type of knee brace you need.

The four types of knee braces and there specific focuses are:

Prophylactic Knee Braces:

Prophylactic knee braces are more commonly known as athletic knee braces. These braces are used in contact sports that put pressure on the knee joints. They are designed to prevent injury and support the ligaments in the knee without restricting the movement of the athlete.

Functional Knee Braces:

Functional knee braces give support to knees that have been previously injured. These braces are designed to give functionality back to a knee that has lost it. They guide and assist the knee during day to day living so that it heals properly.

Rehabilitative Knee Braces:

Rehabilitative knee braces, as their name describes, are used in the rehabilitative process of injured knees. Physical therapists will often prescribe these braces to injured veterans or athletes with serious knee injuries to help alleviate pain and strengthen muscles during the arduous rehabilitating process.

Unloader/Offloader Knee Braces:

An unloader/offloader knee brace is specifically designed with the problem of arthritis in mind. Arthritis inflames the joints and makes it painful to bend them. This knee brace helps take the pressure and weight off those joints to sooth the pain.

Running and Foot Pronation

May 10th, 2010 -- Posted in Health Aids | No Comments »

Runners sometimes think of pronation as something negative or harmful. However, if present in the right amount, it serves as the body’s natural shock absorber. The body responds to the physical forces encountered during walking and running by the action of pronation. When the foot strikes the ground, the arch flattens and gets longer, which enables the foot to roll inward. Without healthy pronation, we would experience many more stress-related injuries when running. To see example photos of the three types of foot pronation, please visit: Cross Country Running Shoes 101.

Neutral Pronation

An optimum foot-strike is described as neutral and results in a slight inward movement of the ankle bone when the foot is in impacts the ground. Runners with neutral pronation are naturally less likely to experience stress-related injuries, because of the foot’s efficient shock absorption capability.

About 25% of all runners have neutral pronation and can benefit from a neutral running shoe. They also can wear a shoe with mild support, but they are better off avoiding motion control shoes, and shoes designed for medium or heavy support.

Over-pronation

When the foot continues its inward roll past the neutral position, it is described as over-pronation. Although a small degree of pronation is the body’s natural means to absorb shock,  too much pronation can contribute to many kinds of running injuries. Most runners exhibit over-pronation to various degrees. Usually, the over-pronating runner requires a shoe that controls excess pronation and guides the foot back along a neutral path.

  • 50 to 60% of all runners display mild to moderate over-pronation, and can benefit from a support shoe.
  • 20 to 30% of all runners display severe over-pronation, and can benefit from a motion control shoe.

Under-pronation (Supination)

On the other hand, not enough pronation is described as under-pronation or supination .  A supinating foot usually has a rigid arch that doesn’t lengthen properly upon impact, so the fool fails to roll enough to absorb the shock. The stress of each foot-strike is instead carried through to the bones,  joints,  and tendons of the leg and foot. Supination causes the body to absorb shock poorly, and results in a different set of possible injuries.

Only 3% of runners naturally supinate.  They can benefit from  a neutral running shoe, one with flexibility and cushioning.

Corrective Shoes

Modern cross country running shoes are constructed to provide various degrees of flexibility, cushioning, and support. In the right combination, these features can help to meet each individual runner’s needs, based on correcting his or her particular type of pronation.
