Will Technology Make Us Thin?

July 2nd, 2010 -- Posted in Health | No Comments »

The world is always changing, it changes faster and faster every day. We all seem to be constantly connected to each other and others through email, instant messaging and the internet. The last thing people do before they go to bed used to be brushing their teeth now it is check emails.

One of the biggest areas of development has been medical research. As scientists can share information amongst themselves easier and more quickly than ever before they can make leaps in development that would have been impossible just a few years before.

One of the biggest areas for research has been in the DNA field, as computers get more and more powerful the sequencing of DNA has become faster and faster. This means that more is known about many of the medical problems that we all face now than at any other time in mankind’s existence.

How long will it be before scientists are able to re-sequence our DNA using stem cells that our parents put into the cord blood bank when we were born. Imagine if as an adult you could go in for a day stay at a private hospital and come out with a permanently speedup of our metabolism.

Where it now takes months or even a year to sequence DNA there will come a time when the computing power in your phone will be powerful enough to do it yourself during your lunch break. I know it may sound far fetched but when our parents were children they thought the same about someone going to the moon.

While it may seem like the ultimate development to be able to get thin without having to stop eating and do any extra exercise, is it going to become the curse of the human race? If we remove personal responsibility and make it as easy to alter our bodies as it is to get the oil changed where will we end up?

Drug Intervention Treatment Centers for Drug-Alcohol Addictions

June 30th, 2010 -- Posted in Health | No Comments »

Drug intervention treatment centers are usually well staffed with highly qualified medical personnel who know how to deal with an alcoholic and have made it their profession to help treat patients, and in some cases families or co-workers of those who are suffering from either drug or alcohol abuse. These centers specifically design programs based on the addiction and the patient’s special needs.

While there are many different reasons why many of these drug intervention treatments work, one of the main reasons is the careful choice of staff and treatments they offer. They are specifically designed to not only work with the actual patient, but to also help their integration back into their families or the work place.

Rehabilitation centers offer special courses of treatment to those with drug or alcohol dependency problems. These centers design specialized programs around activities which the addicts are encouraged to participate in. Interaction with others is encouraged, and this type of group therapy plays a large role in helping addicts through the rehabilitation.

The principle behind drug intervention treatments is that someone steps in, to save the life of another and to encourage or introduce them to a program that will help with their problems, and the person themselves also learns how to cope with and help the addict. There are four main types of intervention programs offered.

Family intervention programs are programs where the whole family, or some members of an addict’s family is also counseled and learns how to help the addict overcome their addiction.  Emergency intervention programs are often used when the person’s addiction is at a life-threatening stage. As the name implies, teen intervention programs help teens who are addicted to either drugs or alcohol. Finally workspace intervention programs are aimed specifically at drug and alcohol abuse at the work place, where co-workers receive counseling and help on how to interact with someone who is addicted to a substance.

In order to proceed with a specialized alcohol detox treatment, such as those listed above, it is highly recommended that you choose a reputable center, that has a history of high success rates.

Avoid caffeine from smoking and coffee if you can. Although a cup of coffee may make you alert, energetic and focused, this only lasts for a few hours at most and after that the feeling gets worse than it was before. When caffeine fix wears out, your energy levels will flop.

Second Hand Smoke Kills

June 3rd, 2010 -- Posted in Featured, Health | No Comments »

It has been made abundantly clear from the message of government agencies, medical boards, and even smokers themselves that the act of smoking is very dangerous to your health. If you haven’t gotten the message by now, chances are you’ve been living in a cave for a few years. Most people think of smoking in personal terms. That means they consider the effects of how it affects their own body. In many ways, this is totally understandable since smoking is an individual act that people decide whether or not to do themselves. However, more and more evidence is highlighting the distinct fact that smoking affects many more people than the smoker themselves. The presence of deadly second hand smoke and its own deadly effects means that other people should be considered when picking up that cigarette. It’s one thing to harm yourself, but when you are affecting the innocent people around you, a change in behaviour might be in order. continue reading »

Well, that topic alone could take pages and pages to cover – in fact, books have been written on similar topics. continue reading »

Lower Triglycerides

May 31st, 2010 -- Posted in Health | No Comments »

Lots of people nowadays are more and more concerned with their cholesterol levels and lowering their triglycerides. Studies have shown that lowering triglycerides will also lower your chances of getting a heart attack or stroke. You may be wondering what triglycerides are and how you can control them. Triglycerides are fatty deposits that are stored throughout your body. When you have an excess amount of triglycerides in your body, they will then start to accumulate and build up in your blood stream as well.

These excess fatty triglycerides in your blood can cause your blood to start to thicken and can cause serious problems with your heart and can even cause blood clots that can lead to strokes. You can lower your triglycerides by eating good foods that won’t turn into glucose and add to your triglyceride levels. Eat good foods that are low in carbohydrates to keep your glucose levels down. Eating less sugar and eating less bread, and products with flour in them can help in reducing your triglycerides levels.

There are some great vitamin supplements you can take that will help you control and lower your triglyceride level. These are fish oil pills and omega 3 oils. Trans fats and hydrogenated fats are bad for you and will raise your triglyceride level as hydrogenated fats have actually had hydrogen gas pumped into the oils to give it a creamy substance. Good fats that come naturally in meat and eggs are good for your system and your body burns them to give you the energy you need on a daily basis.

You’ll want to get your triglyceride level checked and then follow a good diet consisting of healthy foods that are low in trans fats and cholesterol. Fish oils pill supplements can be very helpful as well as getting on a good low carbohydrate diet.
