The New Hair Implants For Women

Men have been able to experience the growth of new hair in their bald spots for years.  They have done this with the help of hair implants surgery.  This procedure was originally tried in the mid 1950’s with not really great success.  It wasn’t until the development of micro-surgical techniques in the 1980’s that hair restoration surgeons were really able to utilize hair implantation effectively so that the result would not look like the hair plugs on a cheap doll’s head.

The problem is, women have never had much luck trying to apply this process.  The difference is in how men lose their hair VS how women do.  Men usually have hair loss in a set pattern with either a receding hair line or a bald spot on the crown, or vertex, of the head.  This leaves a very good area of hair growth at the back of the head for the surgeon to remove hair from.  The doctor removes living hair follicles from this area and then implants them into the balding area where they attach to the nutritional supply and start to grow.  These follicles will then produce a good head of hair for years to come.

Women, on the other hand, generally will lose their hair over the entire scalp instead of in a pattern.  This means the hair thins everywhere so there are not areas of thick growth from which follicles can be removed for implanting.  If hair is transplanted from one site then that section of the scalp just look thinner and more noticeable.  There needed to be a breakthrough before hair implants for women would become a reality.

The new procedure that has answered that problem is follicular unit extraction.  With this method of hair loss treatment the surgeon can actually remove individual body hairs from other places and then transplant these into the scalp.  These hairs are generally of a different texture than the scalp hairs but they do work very well as filler giving the look of a thicker and more natural head of hair.
