Your Massage Table and Your Business
If you haven’t been in coma for the past couple of years, you know that the economy has taken a nosedive and, consequently, unemployment has skyrocketed. Everyone seems to have an opinion but no one really knows whether we’ve seen the worst or if that is yet to come. What most do agree on, though, is that Americans have become a lot more selective about how they spend what money they do have.
An interesting phenomenon has been in the area of massage. Historically viewed as a luxury by a large percentage of the population, many have come to recognize the often life-threatening danger of stress and the ability of massage to alleviate it. That seems to have translated to an increased willingness to pay for massage sessions even at a time when other things are being cut back. This, in turn, has led to more and more people leaving their old shrinking career fields behind and obtaining the training to become massage therapists.
As competition increases and discretionary spending continues to dwindle, it will take more than good skills and a great attitude to be successful. Some of your clients will return based on loyalty but most will look for the best overall experience. This is where you will realize the advantage to having the absolute best massage table that you can afford. Next to the skill and experience of the practitioner, nothing contributes more to a session than the massage table.
Although practitioners have made do with the one-size-fits-all table through the years, many of the different massage techniques benefit greatly from being done on the type of massage table designed with that modality in mind. Three of the more popular of these alternative methods are Shiatsu, Rolfing and Feldenkrais.
The difference between a client relaxing the moment he stretches out on a table that balances support with comfort and an hour spent fidgeting and trying in vain to find a position that isn’t uncomfortable or even painful is enormous. In fact, it may be what decides whether that client pays and walks out the door or checks his calendar for when he can schedule his next session.
